“ How long, O Lord, must I call for help? But You do not listen! Why must I watch all this misery? Wherever I look, I see destruction and violence. I am surrounded by people who love to argue and fight. The law has become paralyzed, and there is no justice in the courts. The wicked far outnumber the righteous, so that justice has become perverted.”
[ Habakkuk 1: 1 – 4 (New Living Translation)]
This could easily have been the lament of anyone in this twenty-first century and I dare say in any part of the world. There is this inner quality in man-most likely a vestigial sign of the divine- that struggles, in most cases, to be set free to right the wrongs in the world around us; the greater the depravity and degradation, the wider and deeper the efforts to find a remedy.
Habakkuk Publishing Company is part of this struggle. It is one of the branches at the end of a road that is a quest to trace the mindlessness of youths behind a gun; the senselessness of murders over turf; the corruption of professing leaders who betray trusting clients, and the list goes on. Habakkuk Publishing Company emerged from the recognition of a generation that does not know its God; that does not know its purpose and use therefore resulting in abuse of all the resources placed in its hands; a lost generation that does not know wisdom.
Habakkuk Publishing Company is an attempt to make wisdom more visible to turn up the volume of her call. Answering this call of Wisdom will result in good judgement, success, enduring wealth, justice. (Proverbs Chapter 8:18).From where is wisdom calling? She stands at the point where decisions have to be made (the crossroads); she is at the mountain top we aim to climb, she makes herself available to the teachable, those who apply themselves to increase in knowledge. She has been around before the beginning, throughout the creation. Wisdom is the Word of God.
The Word of God must permeate every aspect of our lives. If we are to make right decisions, choose constructive options, devise effective strategies to correct and improve our relationships, our institutions, our way of life, we must heed this call to wisdom We must ensure that the Word is our light, our point of reference.
We do this not only for ourselves but for the next generation. We must help them find their way by the records that we keep. Just like those who have gone before as our examples they too must find us faithful. We must write. We must write and make it plain.
